The Turning Point: Life-changing Accident

In 2012, when Avani was just 11 years old, she met with a devastating car accident. The accident left her with a spinal cord injury, resulting in paraplegia—complete loss of function in her legs. For a young girl, it was not just a medical challenge but an emotional shock.

Suddenly, her world turned upside down. The vibrant child who loved running around and exploring life now found herself confined to a wheelchair.

Initially, Avani struggled with self-doubt and a sense of loss. Like many individuals with sudden disabilities, she faced depression and wondered whether she would ever be able to live a fulfilling life again. But with the unwavering support of her parents, she slowly started to rebuild her self-confidence.

Rediscovering Passion

“Before my accident, my childhood was like that of any other kid. Avani explains, “ Among everything else I did, I enjoyed singing and dancing even though I wasn’t participating in any sports at the time.

Avani showed incredible fortitude, refusing to give in to hopelessness. She made a decision to reevaluate her life and follow her passions. She had a penchant for athletics, and soon discovered that shooting was her true calling. She started her training as a shot at the Jagatpura Sports Complex in Jaipur since she was determined to succeed in the sport. My largest source of support throughout has been my family. From giving me moral support at my worst moments to cheering me on at the largest sporting events in the world, said Avani.

Personal Life and Inspirations

Despite her fame, Avani remains grounded. She is pursuing her studies in law alongside her sporting career, proving that academics and athletics can go hand in hand.

Her inspirations include Abhinav Bindra and other Paralympic legends who proved that excellence has no boundaries. She also draws strength from her family, especially her father, who was the first to push her towards sports after the accident.

The journey as a Para-Shooter

The development of Avani as a para-shooter was characterised by constant adaptation. Despite her disabilities, she had to come up with creative ways to take part in her preferred sport. She faced particular difficulties when shooting because the sport requires dexterity, steadiness, and precision. Avani modified her shooting stance to account for her physical constraints and learned how to utilise a shooting wheelchair.

Avani’s devotion and hard work paid off as she competed in the 10m air rifle event at the 2018 Para Shooting World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. She started competing in international contests after quickly becoming recognized for her talent. Her performances grew stronger with time, and she rose to prominence in the para-shooting community.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games marked the apex of Avani’s quest. She participated in two competitions, the 50m rifle three positions and the 10m air rifle. Avani Lekhara won a gold medal and a new Paralympic record in the 10m air rifle competition in a performance that will go down in history. She became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics.

Millions of individuals with disabilities are inspired by Avani’s commitment, tenacity, and capacity to overcome obstacles. She states, “I hope to be a judge someday, and I have a message for every Paralympian out there: Always pursue your aspirations and make yourself proud. Don’t be too hard on yourself for things you can’t change. Another crucial aspect is rest. Show enthusiasm for sports, not simply for winning and losing. The trip you are on is more than just the results,” she grins.
