In a significant development, the All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) has expressed its support for the Waqf Amendment Bill, stating that the proposed changes will bring more transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties across the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Board, President Shaista Amber said the amendment is a step in the right direction and aligns with the growing need to curb corruption and mismanagement within Waqf boards. She highlighted how numerous Waqf properties, meant for the welfare of the community, have been poorly managed due to lack of oversight, leading to legal disputes and financial losses.
“The community needs strong and clean institutions. This bill has the potential to ensure better regulation and protection of Waqf assets. If the government is truly taking steps to safeguard our religious and charitable properties, we must view it positively,” Amber said during a press conference.
The Board also emphasized that women must be given a greater role in the functioning of Waqf institutions, especially in decision-making processes. They urged policymakers to consider women’s participation while drafting and implementing new guidelines.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, introduced in Parliament recently, proposes stricter rules for the administration of Waqf lands and greater checks to prevent unauthorized use or encroachments. While some groups have raised concerns about government interference, the AIMWPLB believes that reforms are necessary and overdue.
The Board’s endorsement marks a rare moment of consensus among Muslim organisations, especially those advocating for reforms and empowerment within the community.
