Early life and education

Brenda Mae Tarpley born on December 11, 1944, in the charity ward of Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, who was professionally known as brenda lee , Her parents were Ruben Lindsey Tarpley (1909–1953) and Annie Grayce (1921–2006). At the time of  birth, Brenda Lee’s weight was 4 pounds, 11 ounces. Wherever her father found work, which was mostly between Atlanta and Augusta, Brenda  Lee went to elementary school. Brenda Lee’s  family didn’t have much money. She was raised in a succession of three-room homes without running water, where Brenda Lee shared a bed with her brother and sister. Her priorities in life were her family, her parents’ employment, and the Baptist church, where she started performing solo singing on Sundays. Brenda Lee Father was the son of a farmer in the red-clay area of Georgia, He was a left-handed pitcher who pitched well while serving 11 years in the US Army. He stood 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm) tall. Her mother was raised in Greene County, Georgia, in a working-class home.

Even though Brenda Lee’s family didn’t have indoor plumbing until after her father passed away, Brenda was charmed by their battery-operated table radio when she was a child. Before she turned three,Brenda Lee’s mother and sister both recalled taking her to a nearby candy store on several occasions. Lee sang Take Me Out to the Ball Game and took first place in her school’s talent event when she was five years old. Positive evaluations for Lee’s performance led to her being invited back on a regular basis to local radio and television programmes. By the time she aged ten, she was supporting her family mostly via singing at events and on local radio and television programmes. Her father passed away in 1953, when she was eight years old, in a construction accident. She was so short that the host would have to prop her up on a wooden crate and drop a stand microphone as low as it would go in order to reach her on the country music show TV Ranch on WAGA-TV in Atlanta during that period. Buell “Jay” Rainwater, who worked at the Jimmie Skinner Music Centre in Cincinnati, Ohio, relocated the family to Cincinnati Lee and Skinner played at the record store for two Saturday shows that were aired.

Lee received a gold record for his cover of Cash Box’s “I’m Sorry” on August 27, 1960. Lee’s greatest pop chart success came from rockabilly and rock and roll-inspired tunes in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Along with “Jambalaya”, “Sweet Nothin’s” , “I Want to Be Wanted” “All Alone Am I” and “Fool” were among her biggest singles. “Everybody Loves Me But You” , “That’s All You Gotta Do” “Emotions” , “You Can Depend on Me” “Dum Dum” 1962’s “Break It to Me Gently” and “As Usual” were among her more popular songs. After recording “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in July, which featured a prominent twanging guitar part by Hank Garland and raucous sax soloing by Nashville icon Boots Randolph, the song was released as a single by Decca that November. Sales were only 5,000 copies, and the song did not fare much better when it was re-released in 1959.[15] Nevertheless, over the course of the following years, it eventually sold over five million copies. Since 2017, the song has been a year-end feature on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number one in 2023.

Before gaining widespread mainstream popularity in the US, she made a television appearance in the UK in 1959. “Sweet Nothin’s” became her first hit song in the UK when it peaked at No. 4 on the UK singles chart in the spring of 1960.Brenda Lee next hit in the UK came in 1961 with “Let’s Jump the Broomstick,” a rockabilly song from 1959 that peaked at No. 12 in the UK but did not chart in the US.While “Speak to Me Pretty” peaked at No. 3 in May 1962 and was Lee’s best hit in the UK according to chart placement, “Here Comes That Feeling” followed closely behind at No. 5 in the summer of 1962. Lee scored two Top Ten hits in the UK that were not released as singles in her own country. However, “Here Comes That Feeling” also appeared in the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No.89, despite its B-side status in the US. The latter was released as the B-side of “Everybody Loves Me But You” in the US, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” 65th anniversary

Since 2015, Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” has consistently resurfaced on the Billboard Hot 100 following modifications to Billboard’s recurrent guidelines in 2012. With 37.1 million plays and 5,000 digital sales, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” hit a new high of #3 on the Hot 100 chart on December 21, 2019, in the United States. It advanced to the next week and stayed there for a second week. The song’s second peak occurred between 2019 and 2022, when Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” took its place at the top.

In November 2023, Lee released a music video for the song in honour of its 65th anniversary in 2023. The film featured her lip-syncing to the original recording while attending a house party alongside Tanya Tucker and Trisha Yearwood. To further promote the song, Lee has also joined TikTok, a social media platform where she shares videos reflecting on the past and present of her song’s popularity.On the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated December 9, 2023, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” topped the Hot 100 for the first time in the United States becoming Lee’s 3rd #1 hit and first since her 1960 single.
