Shakti Dubey’s journey to becoming the topper of the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024 is one of quiet determination, repeated setbacks, and a burning desire to serve the nation. Born and raised in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Shakti grew up in a humble household. Her father works in the police department, and her mother is a homemaker. Surrounded by discipline and care, she developed a strong sense of responsibility and an early interest in societal issues.

She completed her schooling in Prayagraj, where she was known for her curiosity and sincere approach to learning. Later, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Allahabad University. Her academic path continued at Banaras Hindu University, where she completed her postgraduate studies in the same subject. Despite her background in science, her inclination toward public service began to take root during her time at university.
Shakti’s journey with UPSC began in 2018. Like many aspirants, her path was not smooth. Her first three attempts ended at the preliminary stage. It was a period of emotional struggle, filled with self-doubt, but she held on. In her fourth attempt, she cleared the prelims and mains but couldn’t make it to the final list. Each failure pushed her to understand herself better, revise her strategies, and rebuild her mindset.
It was in her fifth attempt that she finally succeeded—and not just with a passing score, but by securing the top rank in the country. Her optional subject was Political Science and International Relations, which aligned well with her interest in understanding how societies are governed and how global politics impacts domestic affairs. Her preparation was balanced, with a mix of self-study, test series, answer writing practice, and mock interviews. She did not rely on shortcuts. Instead, she emphasized understanding the syllabus deeply and staying consistent with current affairs.
During her time at BHU, she was also actively involved in student discussions, debates, and intellectual circles. These experiences helped her build confidence and broadened her understanding of complex social and political issues, which played a significant role in her personality test.
What sets Shakti Dubey apart is her resilience?
She never allowed failure to define her. Instead, she used it as feedback, not as defeat. Her story sends a powerful message to thousands of aspirants that success in UPSC is not reserved for a few; it belongs to those who continue the fight even after falling.
Shakti Dubey’s achievement is not just about a top rank. It is about the spirit of not giving up, the courage to try one more time, and the belief that hard work grounded in purpose will eventually lead to success. Her journey stands as a reminder that behind every rank is a story worth telling, full of patience, reflection, and unwavering effort.
