Following the rape and killing of a junior physician, several female physicians at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have deserted the campus out of pure terror.
After a junior doctor was brutally raped and killed on hospital grounds on August 9, several female physicians at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital fled the campus out of terror. The junior physicians claimed that nearly every hostel at the medical college, except the nursing hostel, had been abandoned.
Before the event, some 160 junior female physicians resided on the grounds of RG Kar College and Hospital, a student there told The Indian Express. But today just 17 women are remaining in the hostel.
Students began to flee the campus after August 9. A few days later, several of them came back. However, additional students—especially the girls—left after the miscreants attacked the hospital on August 14th, according to a student who was cited by the news agency.
The nurses who are remaining on campus stated that, despite their fears, they are powerless. The article states that there are two nearly full nurse dorms on site. Even after such terrifying events, we still work night shifts and occasionally find ourselves on a hospital by ourselves. We feel so insecure right now,” a nurse stated.
A crowd broke onto the RG Kar Hospital campus on August 14, the night of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder demonstrations, and destroyed cars, public property, and the demonstration site. Along with damaging CCTVs, they also vandalized the hospital’s emergency room, nursing home, and pharmacy.
A significant number of female physicians evacuated the school after the event. Aparajita Singh, a senior attorney, claims that following the vandalism event, only around 30–40 female and 60–70 male resident doctors remained on campus.
Rape-murder case in Kolkata
On August 9, the semi-naked body of a 31-year-old medical student was discovered in the lecture hall at RG Kar Medical College. The police claim that the incident occurred between three and five in the morning.
According to the victim’s postmortem report, the woman had been sexually raped before she was strangled and suffocated to death. The investigation found that the apprehended accused, Sanjoy Roy, murdered the doctor by suffocating and strangling her after sexually abusing and seriously injuring her.
The graphic episode provoked national shock and prompted protests both inside and beyond the medical profession. In the meantime, the CBI obtained authorization from a municipal court on Thursday to test the victim’s polygraph against the former principal and four physicians of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with whom she is said to have had supper the night before she was discovered dead.
