Early life, Experienced a life-changing injury when she was just 11 years old.

Avani, who was born on November 8, 2001, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, experienced a life-changing injury when she was just 11 years old. She was paralyzed from the waist down after suffering a spinal cord injury in a car accident in 2012 while on a family vacation. This tragic event could have easily crushed Avani’s hopes and ambitions, but she made a different decision. Her infirmity did not stop her from pursuing her dream, though.

Rediscovering Passion

“Before my accident, my childhood was like that of any other kid. Avani explains, “ Among everything else I did, I enjoyed singing and dancing even though I wasn’t participating in any sports at the time.

Avani showed incredible fortitude, refusing to give in to hopelessness. She made a decision to reevaluate her life and follow her passions. She had a penchant for athletics, and soon discovered that shooting was her true calling. She started her training as a shot at the Jagatpura Sports Complex in Jaipur since she was determined to succeed in the sport. My largest source of support throughout has been my family. From giving me moral support at my worst moments to cheering me on at the largest sporting events in the world, said Avani.

The journey as a Para-Shooter

The development of Avani as a para-shooter was characterised by constant adaptation. Despite her disabilities, she had to come up with creative ways to take part in her preferred sport. She faced particular difficulties when shooting because the sport requires dexterity, steadiness, and precision. Avani modified her shooting stance to account for her physical constraints and learned how to utilise a shooting wheelchair.

Avani’s devotion and hard work paid off as she competed in the 10m air rifle event at the 2018 Para Shooting World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. She started competing in international contests after quickly becoming recognized for her talent. Her performances grew stronger with time, and she rose to prominence in the para-shooting community.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games marked the apex of Avani’s quest. She participated in two competitions, the 50m rifle three positions and the 10m air rifle. Avani Lekhara won a gold medal and a new Paralympic record in the 10m air rifle competition in a performance that will go down in history. She became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics.

One cannot emphasise the magnitude of Avani’s accomplishment. Her victory showed the enormous potential of para-athletes on the international stage and brought pride and delight to India. Millions of individuals with disabilities are inspired by Avani’s commitment, tenacity, and capacity to overcome obstacles. She shows them that anything is possible with the right amount of willpower.

Inspiring Millions

Lekhara, who was awarded the Khel Ratna, insists that “there’s more to me than just my sport and my achievements,” as she is enrolled in the University of Rajasthan to complete a five-year law degree. She states, “I hope to be a judge someday, and I have a message for every Paralympian out there: Always pursue your aspirations and make yourself proud. Don’t be too hard on yourself for things you can’t change. Another crucial aspect is rest. Show enthusiasm for sports, not simply for winning and losing. The trip you are on is more than just the results,” she grins.

The goal of Avani Lekhara’s  journey is to change the perception of handicap, not merely to win medals. She has emerged as a role model for aspirant athletes with disabilities, demonstrating that there are no real constraints. In spite of the challenges they encounter, people are inspired by Avani’s narrative to pursue their dreams with unshakable courage and commitment.
