The Recording Academy has officially announced that the 68th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 1, 2026, returning to Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena. As anticipation builds for music’s biggest night, the Academy has also unveiled several significant changes, including the addition of new award categories and key rule updates aimed at keeping pace with today’s evolving music landscape.

New Categories Reflecting Changing Trends
Three new Grammy categories will debut in 2026, highlighting the Academy’s effort to celebrate a broader spectrum of creative work.
- Best Album Cover – Visual artistry will once again be spotlighted, as this revived category honors outstanding album artwork and design.
- Best Traditional Country Album – With the rise in classic country revival, this category will specifically recognize projects rooted in traditional country music sounds.
- Best Contemporary Country Album – What was previously just “Best Country Album” will now focus on modern country styles under this new name.
These additions mark a clear effort to separate traditional from contemporary trends, giving each subgenre its rightful place on music’s most prestigious stage.
Rule Changes Aim for Fairer, More Inclusive Recognition
In addition to the new categories, the Recording Academy has introduced several adjustments to eligibility and crediting, designed to recognize a wider range of contributors:
- Best New Artist eligibility has expanded to include those who were part of an Album of the Year nominee, as long as their contribution was less than 20% of the album’s total duration.
- Visual Packaging categories will now accept albums sold directly to fans through artist or label websites—acknowledging the increasing role of independent releases and direct-to-consumer strategies.
- Classical Awards will now credit composers and librettists alongside performers and producers, offering a more complete acknowledgment of creative input in the genre.
Academy’s Vision for the Future
Speaking about the changes, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said the updates are part of a larger commitment to reflect the diversity of today’s music scene.
“Our job is to listen to the music community and evolve with it,” Mason said. “These changes are about honoring creativity in every form—whether it’s the sound, the story, or the visual presentation.”
Key Dates Leading to Grammy Night
The eligibility window for the 2026 awards runs from August 31, 2024, to August 30, 2025, with the official nominations set to be announced on November 7, 2025. Final-round voting will begin on December 12 and close by January 5, 2026.
As the industry begins to gear up for awards season, this year’s changes suggest that the 2026 Grammys won’t just be about who takes home the trophies—but also about how the Academy continues to grow with the art it celebrates.
