Accused of inciting others to kill the chief minister in a style evocative of Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the doctor in Kolkata is charged with rape and murder.

Following the rape-murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a student was arrested by the Kolkata Police on Sunday for posting “provocative, offensive comments” on social media. The post incited violence against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Claiming to have encouraged others to kill the chief minister in a style evocative of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the accused, Kirti Sharma, went by the Instagram account “kirtisocial”.

According to the Kolkata Police, the arrest was carried out following the filing of a complaint at the Taltala police station.

“A complaint was received that the person with Instagram username ‘Kirtisocial’ uploaded three stories related to the incident that took place at RG Kar MCH, disclosing the picture and identity of the victim,” a police official reportedly told news agency PTI.

In addition, the accused individual published two tales about the CM that included derogatory remarks and threats to her life. He remarked, “Those were highly provocative in nature and could have sparked social unrest and fostered hatred among communities.”

The police stated that the accused would appear before a judge. Senior Trinamool Congress lawmaker Kunal Ghosh claimed on Monday that the Kolkata Police are solely targeting individuals who share false information, phony audio, and the identity of the doctor who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on social media.

It’s acceptable for individuals to protest, according to Kunal Ghosh. “If you believe you’re going to protest, say it 100 times in polite words. On X, Kunal Ghosh wrote, “Do it a thousand times over.” “But giving wrong information, distorted assumptions, fake audio, purposeful inciting posts, names, and photos of the deceased, the police will warn you” , he said.

Hours after he urged that the CBI question Kolkata Police Commissioner and former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, the TMC MP, was summoned by Kolkata Police on Sunday.

Roy had asked the custodial questioning of the previous head of the medical facility and the CP to determine “who and why floated the suicide story” and urged the CBI, which is investigating the rape and murder of a woman doctor at the state-run RG Kar MCH, to act honestly.

According to an officer who spoke to news agency PTI, Kolkata Police have also summoned two well-known physicians and former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee for allegedly spreading rumors and revealing the name of the female doctor who was raped and killed at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In addition to these individuals, 57 other people have received summonses from the police for disseminating false information on the event, he added. He said that summonses to appear before officials of the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar on Sunday at 3 p.m. were sent to Drs. Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami.
